CAPTURING RILEY: A Teen Team Member with a Heart for Service and Nature

Meet Riley, a 16-year-old student at Bio-Med Science Academy. But there's so much more to Riley than just her academic achievements. As a member of Davinda's Teen Team and Dream Team, she has embraced not only her love for modeling but also her passion for helping others, all while being a strong, compassionate young woman who shines with authenticity.

A Family-Centered Life

One of the things that truly defines Riley is her deep connection to her family. "My family is a really big part of my life, and they have helped me through so much," Riley shares. Her support system has been the foundation for everything she does, and it’s clear that the love and guidance she receives from them are pivotal in her journey of self-discovery.

This unwavering bond with her family is especially evident when she talks about her role model—her mom. "My mom is incredibly supportive about everything I do, and I don’t know what I would do without her," Riley says. "I’ve learned so much from her, and I aspire to be as compassionate and loving as she is." It’s no surprise that Riley's desire to help others stems from the example her mom has set, shaping her into the thoughtful and caring individual she is today.

A Heart for Service

Riley’s passion for giving back to her community is undeniable. She believes that helping others is more than just an activity—it’s a core part of who she is. "Community service makes up a really big part of me," Riley explains. "I really love to help people, and I want to become a social worker to help kids in bad situations."

In fact, Riley has already begun making a difference at Bio-Med Science Academy by starting a club called the Community Club. Riley, along with some of her friends, launched the club in November 2023, with the mission to provide volunteer opportunities to all students. "At Bio-Med, every student needs at least 30 hours of volunteer work to graduate, and I realized that some people have a hard time finding these opportunities," she explains. "The only club that offers them is NHS, but there are very strict guidelines for applications and it’s very limited. So, I had the idea to start a club that anyone in the school can join to get volunteer hours!"

Through the Community Club, Riley has organized multiple donation drives, such as one to benefit Limitless Ambition, a group that creates care packages for young girls who have experienced trauma.

More recently, the club hosted a Fidget Blanket Drive in partnership with a local cause that helps create sensory blankets for Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients.

Passion for Nature and the Outdoors and Music

While Riley is deeply committed to her community, she also has a profound love for nature. "I love being outdoors. I love nature, and I’m the happiest when I’m outside," she says with a smile. Whether it’s picking up trash at West Branch Campgrounds or simply hiking through the woods, Riley feels most at peace when surrounded by the natural world. For her, spending time outdoors is more than just a hobby—it’s a reminder to slow down and appreciate the world around her.

Along with her love for family, service, and nature, Riley is also passionate about music—specifically the work of singer and artist Melanie Martinez. "I absolutely love her music and how she brings injustices to light through her art," Riley shares. Melanie’s boldness in addressing difficult topics resonates with Riley and has inspired her to embrace her own voice in everything she does.

Advice for Future Teen Team Members

As a returning member of the Teen Team, Riley has some advice for anyone considering joining. "I would tell them that everyone on the teen team is so incredibly supportive and amazing to one another," she says. "It’s a great way to make new friends!" For Riley, being part of the Teen Team has been a transformative experience. "For me personally, it helped me step out of my comfort zone and love myself for who I am," she shares. "So, I would encourage anyone and everyone to join. The photos are amazing, and that's definitely a plus!"

Looking Ahead: A Future in Social Work

Riley’s passion for helping others doesn’t stop at high school. She’s already thinking about her future and considering pursuing a degree in social work at Kent State University. "I want to work with abused children or get into a career that helps kids in bad situations," she says, emphasizing her desire to make a long-term impact in the lives of those who need it most.

Riley is a shining example of the powerful combination of kindness, ambition, and community. From her family ties to her commitment to volunteering, from her passion for nature to her love for music, Riley embodies the very essence of what it means to be an individual with purpose. As a Teen Team member, she’s not just a model for Davinda’s camera—she’s also a role model for others who are inspired by her journey, her heart for service, and her unwavering authenticity.

Riley is proof that even at 16, you can make a difference in your community, inspire others, and stay true to what matters most. She’s an incredible young woman whose story is just beginning, and we can’t wait to see what the next chapter brings.

Keep shining, Riley!
